Upgrade Exchange 2010 SP2 on DAG Servers

In my previous blog we have upgraded the CAS & Hub Servers now we are going to upgrade our MBX server

Imp note :

First important think here we should not upgrade MBX role before CAS within the same active directory site.

When we are applying service pack we need to make sure all the specific issues.

  •  Take the backup for all the Databases
  • Stop all service which used by anti-virus
  • Stop Monitoring Services
  • Verify the  health of the DAG and its mailbox database copies
  • Upgrade the Service first on Passive database.

After you upgrade Exchange 2010 to a newer service pack, you can’t uninstall the service pack to revert to the previous version. If you uninstall the service pack, you remove Exchange from the server

Lets check the Current Primary Active Manager

Get-DatabaseAvailabilityGroup Exdag  -Status | Format-List PrimaryActiveManager

Another Important Point is we need to place the server in maintenance mode if we are using any monitoring applications to avoid getting alarms and alerts.

Exchange 2010 SP1 Provides script to run StartDagServerMaintenance.ps1  thanks to Microsoft for making this Easier

Step 2 :

Performing Server Switch Over for Upgrade, We need run the following  CMD from Powershell

Move-ActiveMailboxDatabase -server Ex-Mail01,  Now as we can check the current owner of the database server is being moved to Ex-mail01

The above warning is on Public folder which we cannot replicate using DAG , We need to prevent the DAG member from becoming Failover target using the following CMD

Set-MailboxServer  -DatabaseCopyAutoActivationPolicy:Blocked

Upgrading the service pack using Exchange 2010 SP2

Extract the setup files

Click on Upgrade

Click Next

Accept the agreement

Once it installed check the Version of Exchange Server

Now when are done with Passive node we need to upgrade on the second server

Moving active mailbox databases to server.

Follow the same steps which we have done for the Ex-mail01.

Thanks for viewing !!!!!!!!!

What’s New in Microsoft Exchange Server 2010 SP2

As we all know Microsoft has release new service pack for Exchange 2010 on Dec 5 2011 and also added some exciting features which can be useful when you’re planning, deploying, and administering your organization , I want to outline some of the features for Exchange 2010 Sp2.

Download Microsoft Exchange Server 2010 Service Pack 2 (SP2):

Got some new Features on it we will cover all the new Features for Exchange 2010 SP2

Some Interesting features are

  • OWA Mini
  • Hybrid Configuration Wizard
  • Address Book Policies
  • OWA Cross Site Silent Redirection
  • Mini OWA

This features was previously with Exchange 2003 OMA (Outlook Mobile Access)  which is back in Exchange 2010 SP2,

It’s a light weighted browser based client for mobile devices.

It does the basic things

  • Access Emails, Subfolders, Calendars ,Contacts, Task
  • Manage Meeting Requests
  • Set the Time zone from options
  • Simple to administer, though all via EMS
  • Access to Global Address list & Out of office configuration

The user must specify the full URL to access it

It has pure HTML links which takes us what information we need which is super fast !!!!!

Mini OWA is design for basic authentication,

Imp note: But there is disadvantage for it we don’t have Sign out option in OWA Mini.

If a user’s mobile phone is lost or stolen, the user’s password should be changed immediately.

  • Hybrid Configuration Wizard

Exchange 2010 has combined with cloud based solution like office 365, We need to establish relationship between Exchange on premises with Office 365.

This wizard helps simplify the configuration of Exchange sharing features

Calendar and free/busy sharing between On premises Exchange and office 365

Share a unified GAL

Share an SMTP namespace

Use a single OWA URL

Secure mail flow

Mailbox move

Online archive.

  • Address Book Policies

ABP is one of the good features which came up with SP2 mostly help us to control our GAL & customize what we need.

When we create an Address book policy we assign a GAL, by this we can apply a policy to per mailbox users to give them customize GAL in OWA \ Outlook.

Purpose for using.

  • Provide subdivided address books
  • ABP can be manage through EMS & EMC
  • Allow administrator to control over the GAL

  • OWA Cross Site Silent Redirection

The concept of this features is Client Access server can act as a proxy for other Client Access servers within the organization. This helps us when we have multiple Client access server in our organization and some of the CAS server which are not exposed to the internet.

  • When a user access mailbox through general OWA but his mailbox is located on some other AD Site,

  • CAS server does a service discovery , determines that it must redirect user to a different site.

  • We can Enable this through EMS cmd

Set-OWAVirtualDirectory -identity “MysExchangeserver\OWA” (Default Web site)” -CrossSiteRedirectType Silent

User will get 2 times logon credentials when try to login in OWA,

When this setting is configured, a user’s web browser is automatically redirected whenever a Client Access server must redirect an Outlook Web App request to Client Access server or server array located in another Active Directory site. If you’re using forms-based authentication, SSL is required. For redirection to occur, the target Client Access server Outlook Web App virtual directory must have an ExternalURL value configured.

Upgrade Exchange 2010 SP2 on CAS array

Microsoft released the second service pack for Microsoft Exchange Server SP2 Link

Now im going to Upgrade My Servers to SP2

Before we apply service pack 2 we need to check all the Compatibilities  of our 3rd party software’s like Anti-Spam, Antivirus, Operating system service packs and Windows updates.

Most of companies have CAS array solution  to Avoid any downtime for the users, we need to manage all our servers in such a way user should not fell any downtime ,

So when we are upgrading Service Packs, Roll updates we need to apply the update on one server at a time.

Imp Note :

When you upgrade Exchange 2010 to a newer service pack, you can’t uninstall the service pack to revert to the previous version. If you uninstall the service pack, you remove Exchange from the server.

Upgrading Exchange 2010 Order

Client Access

Hub Transport

Unified Messaging

Lets check our Current Version of Exchange Server

Current version it shows 14.1 ( Build no 218.15)

Note: Another Important thing is we cannot make Exchange 2010 SP1 and SP2 Co-existence in same Load balancing.

We will start with one CAS server and Another.

Firstly we need to remove the server which will part of update from WNLB

Stop the  node from Control Host

Right Click go to Properties  under default state: stopped.

Now we need to check we have Third party applications like Anti-Spam or Anti-Virus Services running we need to manually stop those services.

Disabling the Monitoring’s  like SCOM agents or another.

We need to make sure all the prerequisites on Client Access servers are installed.

Open Server Manager.

Select Roles.

Under Web Server (IIS), select Add Role Services.

In the Add Role Services wizard,   on the Select Role Services page,   select the following Windows features:

IIS 6 WMI Compatibility

ISAPI Filters

Client Certificate Mapping Authentication

Directory Browsing

HTTP Errors

HTTP Logging

HTTP Redirection

Request Monitor

Static Content

Run the Setup File

Here we go now we are ready to Upgrade Exchange 2010 Sp2.

Now lets Verify the Exchange Setup by View Setup logs.

We need to check service pack  setup log file to C:\ExchangeSetupLogs to verify the setup.

Also Make sure all the services are working and started automatically.

Start the server in the NLB cluster.

Make the Default State Mode:  started

Once you have upgraded the First CAS server then you can go and applied the same on Another.
