Recovering a Failed Exchange 2013 Server

Exchange Server recovery is most critical task for Exchange Admin, we need to prepare for any type of disaster recovery

Usually  when there is natural disaster or flood on your current datacenter site you may lose all the servers. So it really important thing to have recovery plan from any kind of situation to recover our servers.

In this blog I’m recovering a lost exchange server 2013 on different hardware,

Exchange 2013 server can be recover by using the Setup /m:RecoverServer switch which rebuilds the Exchange server with the same name by using object information from Active directory.

We need to check the installation path of Exchange Server if we have installed it on different location then we need to use /Targetdir switch to specify the location

Open the ADSIT EDIT tool

Example:

Navigate to the following location: CN=Ex-15,CN=Servers,CN=First Administrative Group,CN=Administrative Groups,CN=First Organization,CN=Microsoft Exchange,CN=Services,CN=Configuration,DC=test,CN=Com

98

97

Checked the MSExchInstall Path

In my case its default location C:\Program Files\Microsoft\Exchange Server\V15

The following task you need to perform for recovery exchange server

  • First we need to reset the computer account from AD
  • Deploy new operating system with windows updates
  • Assign same ip address
  • Join to domain with the same¬†name as before
  • Assign same drive letters on the server
  • Install pre-requisites which is required
  • We will use Setup ¬†¬†¬†¬† /m:RecoverServer mode installation

99

100

Reseted the Computer Account

We are done with the new operating system with all the Pre-requisites installed on new server

Lets start recovery mode Setup

Setup /m:RecoverServer /IAcceptExchangeServerLicenseTerms

101

Reboot the server

You can login to https://ex-15.test.com/ECP

There you are done with your disaster recovery¬† ūüôā

Accessing OWA from Multiple Domain URL

If we got a requirement for allowing access¬† multi domain users to access OWA from different URL’s

Below is steps how you can implement more than one OWA & ECP on one Exchange 2013 server

Lets assign new ip for new website

82

Lets Copy the OWA & ECP folder from

OWA

C:\Program Files\Microsoft\Exchange Server\V15\ClientAccess\OWA

 to

C:\Program Files\Microsoft\Exchange Server\V15_Arabitpro\ClientAccess\OWA

ECP

C:\Program Files\Microsoft\Exchange Server\V15\ClientAccess\ECP

to

C:\Program Files\Microsoft\Exchange Server\V15_Arabitpro\ClientAccess\ECP

85

Create new website from IIS¬† “Webmail

84

86

Give the Default path to “C:\Inetpub\wwwroot”¬† folder

Bind this with the following IP which we have assigned to 80 port as well 443

Now we are ready with the new site “webmail”

Under IIS Settings

ISAPI and CGI Restrictions

87

We need to  ALLOW the following  DLL file

C:\Program Files\Microsoft\Exchange Server\V15_Arabitpro\ClientAccess\Owa\auth\owaauth.dll

Create OWA & ECP Directory by using the following CMD using EMS

88

New-OwaVirtualDirectory -website “Webmail” -Path “C:\Program Files\Microsoft\Exchange Server\V15_Arabitpro\ClientAccess\Owa”

The warning indicates we need to create ECP Virtual Directory also in the same website

For ECP use the following

New-EcpVirtualDirectory -website “Webmail” -Path “C:\Program Files\Microsoft\Exchange Server\V15_Arabitpro\ClientAccess\ECP

You need to install Certificate for External Users with the new domain name

Login to EAC

Under Servers –> Virtual Directories –> select the webmail OWA and ECP check the authentication and set the new domain URL

90

Reset the IIS

93

Now you need to create accepted domain and Email policy for new domain

Under Mailflow –> Accepted Domains

94

91

here im https://mail.arabitpro.com/owa

92

You are done with it.

Now we have users from different emails address accessing there mails from there own domain url’s

I hope the above information helpful for you thanks for viewing.

Move Database Path in Exchange 2013

Exchange 2013 has a limitation in moving the Database path location you can only use Exchange Management Shell to move the database and log file path, before we used to have an option to use EMC or EMS

Lets start using EMS

Create a separate partition for DB and Log files

79

Open EMS and check the current EDB & Log file Location by using CMD

74

Get-MailboxDatabase “database name” | FL Name,*path*

75

We are moving our current db path from C:\Program Files\Microsoft\Exchange Server\V15\Mailbox\Mailbox Database 0164909908\Mailbox Database 0164909908.edb   to  E:\DB01\Mailbox Database 0164909908.edb

Use the following CMD  Move-databasepath

Move-databasepath -identity “Database Name” -EDBFilePath “C:\Program Files\Microsoft\Exchange Server\V15\Mailbox\Mailbox Database 0164909908\Mailbox Database 0164909908.edb” -LogFolderPath “E:\DB01”

80

Prompt you to confirm

The database gets dismount and Copied to new location

After moving verified its moved sucessfully

81

As you can see there EDB File path and Log File path has been changed to E:\DB01

you are done with this.

Thanks for viewing
